The Coordinator Community Engagement & Volunteers supports HMI's external engagement initiatives in the areas of corporate and community engagement, group and individual volunteer management. As part of the Development Team, the Coordinator creates meaningful engagement activities, and supports the development and cultivation of relationships with potential corporate partners, sponsors and volunteers in order to build a broader base of support for the organization's mission and to raise awareness and visibility about the organization's services and impact.





  • Contributes to the development and refinement of HMI's corporate and community engagement,  and volunteer strategy, as well as the prioritization of partner relationships, establishment of affinity groups and team based volunteer activities
  • Creates a menu of easily replicable corporate partnerships, community and volunteer engagement activities
  • Enusres that HMI leverages corporate employee giving and co-branded opportunities with corporate partners
  • Recruits, orients, and coordinates volunteers for fundraising and cultivation events
  • Responds to and manages miscellaneous corporate and community engagement requests, using an established system of prioritization
  • Use Raiser's Edge database as it relates to tracking and reporting information on the cultivation and stewardship of prospective corporate partner and volunteers

Volunteer  Management | Community Engagement | Partnership Development

  • Develops strategic partnerships with social, civic, and corporate groups in accordance with the organization's engagement strategy
  • Recruits, orients, and coordinates volunteer activities for social, civic, and corporate volunteer groups, both planned and on-demand, as appropriate
  • Explores new program models for engaging corporate volunteers
  • Coordinates logistics for group volunteer events with internal and external stakeholders, including pre-event planning, day-of management, and appropriate follow-up activities
  • Identifies new corporate groups to engage and leverage opportunities for speaking engagements
  • Serves as the point person and coordinates logistics for third-party community engagement events, including speaking engagements and special events that increase visibility for and/or provide financial philanthropic benefit to HMI




Recruitment| Selection | Placement | Onboarding


  • Serves as the first point of connection and responds to inquiries from corporate, community and industry partners, and the general public interested in volunteer engagements with HMI  
  • Coordinates all volunteer engagements, volunteer outreach, recruitment, selection, placement and orientation activities to assure a robust and successful community engagement and volunteer program to support the goals of the organization
  • Implements an outreach and recruitment campaign via social media , including HMI's website and other viable HMI-approved outreach methods
  • Works with Executive and Program leadership to identify opportunities for meaningful corporate volunteer and community engagements
  • Conducts interviews of prospective volunteer candidates to assess their suitability for volunteer engagement and coordinate with Human Resources all onboarding and off-boarding activities including background security clearances
  • Trains HMI staff on Volunteer Program procedures.


Administrative coordination


  • Ensures compliance with applicable statutory and contractual regulations regarding the involvement

of volunteers and reporting requirements

  • Develops and maintains Volunteer Program policies and procedures; ongoing review

and updating of Volunteer Program forms and materials; maintain Volunteer Program Handbook

  • Serves as troubleshooter to help resolve any issues relating to the volunteers engaged by HMI
  • Maintains all Volunteer Program records, including evaluation of the volunteer program and reviewing and upgrading data systems as needed
  • Maintains all time and work effort data as it relates to volunteers
  • Through actionable key performance indicators and metrics, evaluates progress of the annual volunteer program and goals; coordinate input and other relevant reports in Raisers Edge system
  • Maintains roster of volunteer positions, including jobs geared toward corporate groups


  • Coordinates all communication activities related to the volunteer initiatives including social media presence, e-newsletter, Facebook page, Twitter, and HMI Website



May be assigned other related job duties as determined by the Management of HMI





  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university plus one year experience; or Bachelor's Degree plus 3 years' experience coordinating community engagement with corporations or individual based volunteer programs for a nonprofit organization
  • Knowledge of Raiser's Edge and/or other volunteer management databases is preferred













  • Excellent organizational, administrative, verbal presentation and written skills

  • Noise level is moderate
  • Employee will be require to travel to corporate worksites throughout the New York metropolitan area
